Proje Özeti

Gaziantep Üniversitesi ve Gaziantep Büyük Şehir Belediyesi işbirliği ile Gaziantep Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesi Fizik Mühendisliği Bölümü öncülüğünde; nemsiz nispeten kuru, temiz bir gündüz ve gece gökyüzüne sahip, güneşlilik haritası verilerine göre yıllık yaklaşık 3000 saat güneşli güne sahip, coğrafi ve iklim bakımından elverişli olan bölgemiz için şehrimize bir gözlemevi kurulacaktır. Her kesimden insanların ilgisini çeken aynı zamanda bilime hizmet edecek olan bu gözlemevinde öğrencilerimize araştırma imkânları sağlanacaktır.

Projenin hayata geçirilmesiyle birlikte, Fizik Mühendisliği Bölümünde Astronomi Anabilim Dalı açılacaktır. Proje “Bilim Toplum” projesi kapsamında halka hizmet edecek ama bu arada ileriye dönük Astronomi ve Uzay bilimleri alanında Yüksek Lisans ve doktora öğrencileri yetiştirilecek düzeyde çalışmalar yapılarak AR_GE ye önem verilecektir. Eğitsel amaçlı olan bu gözlemevi her türlü eğitim düzeyine hizmet verebileceği gibi ilgilenen vatandaşlarımıza da hitap edecektir. Yaz aylarında halk günleri ile gökyüzü ve gök olayları halka ve öğrencilere tanıtılması planlanmaktadır. Astronomi dersinin uygulamaları yapılarak, astronomi eğitimine ve ilgili gökbilimcilere yardımcı olunacak, bilimsel araştırmalar yapılarak, ulusal-uluslararası gözlemevleriyle işbirliği kurulacaktır.

Gözlemevinin bölgemizde bir ilk olacağından dolayı, çevre illerde okuyan öğrencilerimize ve aynı zamanda vatandaşlarımıza da faydalı olacaktır. Yetişen yeni öğrencilerimize, ilgilenen halkımıza uzayın derinliklerini ve daha milyonlarca galaksiler, yıldızlar, gezegenler ve uyduları görme-inceleme imkanı sunulacaktır. Bölgedeki diğer üniversiteleri de teşvik edici bir unsur olacağından, üniversitemiz bilim merkezi haline gelecektir.

Project Summary

In collaboration between the University of Gaziantep and Gaziantep Big City Manucipality (GBŞB), and under leadership from the Department of Engineering Physics in the Engineering Faculty of the University of Gaziantep, an observatory will be established in our city to serve the region. With a relatively dry climate (approximately 3000 hours clear sky per year) the region provides a suitable location for an observatory.

The purpose of the observatory is three-fold; first to serve as facility for education and encouragement of school children in the observational sciences, second, to further the environment of the city for both residents and visitors, and thirdly, to provide a scientific training facility for undergraduate and graduate students in the University.

While carrying out this project, an Astronomy physics group will be established in the Department of Engineering Physics which will service the public in the extent of a social project, and initiate post graduate research training for MSc and PhD students attaching importance to Ar-GE (research and development).

This observatory has a general educational target addressing the interests of both the general public and academics. During the summer, open days for the public will be planned where presentations of celestial bodies will be given. Special visits for school children will be organised. Students taking astronomy-related courses will have the opportunity to use the observatory for hands-on experience. The observatory will also be used for postgraduate research in collaboration with other national and international observatories.

Because the observatory will be the first the region it will be beneficial also to neighboring cities furthering the reputation of Gaziantep as being a center of education for the region.
